generation network applications social networks. "Not at all isolated, curious"

They have more friends, are more tolerant and open to diversity, continue to prefer face to face relationships with family and loved ones, but they write very few letters. Here is the picture of the generation that uses mobile phones and social networks.

think that behind the computer screen is anti-social people hiding and fearing the world? We were wrong. To say this is an American survey conducted by Pew Internet & American Life Project , a non-profit and non-party that provides information on attitudes and trends in the United States and around the world.

This time to be analyzed is the relationship between isolation and technology, with particular interest in those means that over the last twenty years have replaced the old mode of interaction. And the result is amazing. Among the more than 3 thousand adult Americans interviewed by telephone, who frequents social networking sites, blogs or use the phone has more opportunities to forge relationships. The volume of social relationships is on average higher than 12% among those who use mobile phones and 9 among those attending sharing sites or send emails. Since the last report on the topic dating back to 1985, number of people who confide their secrets but fell from three to two. But the use of technology is not related to this decrease.

Indeed, for those using the new social network contacts are more numerous and diverse than the others: only 45% of respondents to talk about important issues with people outside their family while he does 55% of Internet users. Those who have exchanged photos online, 61% chance of higher than average to have discussions with stakeholders with different political interests. Bloggers have a 95% chance of having relations with people of different ethnicity from their own. In other words, the technologies of communication are factor of social integration.

According to the new Pew Research network to help expand their horizons and break down geographical and racial barriers. It turns out for example that those who use the phone has a larger pool of contacts of 25%, who is an Internet user base of 15% and the percentage is even more for those who are a sailor or a habitual user service chat or sharing images. Furthermore, people with whom to discuss important topics are for those who use the phone number greater than 12% for those who share files or use chat 9%. Internet users are more likely to frequent bars by 45%, 69% eating in a restaurant and 42% for a walk in a public park. Who uses the new technologies are also those who practice more volunteering on a local basis, as well as youth groups and charities.

One thing that will console the many detractors of the new forms of sociality is certainly relative isolation. Today, as in 1985, the percentage of American citizens who may be considered socialmente isolati continua ad essere pari al 6%.

"The figure is part of a typical trend in human history% u2013 says Keith Hampton, the main author of the report and professor at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania% u2013 the same happened when he was introduced to the landline and felt for the first time that it was possible to obtain social support outside the circle of the neighborhood. Social networks are just another example of how man uses communication technologies to achieve various kinds of interactions with people at a distance first that we would never have reached. "
